What is BMI?
BMI stands for Body Mass Index. It is important to know what your BMI does
and does not indicate about your weight, health and lifestyle choices.
Your BMI is calculated from your height and weight and is a fairly reliable
indicator of body fat for most adults. BMI is only one of many factors
that you and your healthcare provider should use in evaluating your overall health.
Reaching and maintaining a healthy weight is important and may help prevent
and control many diseases and conditions. If you are overweight or obese,
you are at a higher risk of developing serious health problems including
heart disease, high blood pressure, type 2 diabetes, breathing problems,
and certain cancers. Maintaining a healthy weight may help lower your
risk for developing certain health problems, help you feel good about
yourself, and give you more energy to enjoy life.
