Why You Need a Primary Care Provider

Statistics show as many as 25% of Americans do not have a primary care provider. However, it’s more difficult to navigate your health concerns if you don’t have an ongoing doctor/patient relationship with your primary care provider who you consult regularly.
Why It’s Important to Establish a Relationship with a Primary Care Provider
Your primary care provider is “your” provider who manages your health concerns. A PCP can detect health threats earlier before they become harder to treat. They make sure you’re healthy at every life stage and are your medical home base to guide your care, particularly if you need to see any specialists. Even if you feel well, your PCP will get a baseline of your health from annual physical exams, which provides useful comparison data in case you fall ill in the future.
Your primary care provider can also:
- Advise you on how to improve your health
- Keep a detailed medical history
- Monitor and treat chronic health problems over time
- Treat you when you’re sick
- Provide referrals if you need more advanced care from a specialist
How Do I Choose a PCP?
It’s important to find a provider who not only has the qualifications to manage your health but fits your personality and accepts your Florida Health Care Plans insurance. You can ask for referrals from people you trust or other healthcare professionals you consult. Make sure you verify that the PCP is in-network with FHCP for the lowest copays. You may also want to check the Google reviews to get a sense of what patients have been saying about the provider you intend to see.
