Colds and Flu
Did you know that colds, most sore throats and coughs are caused by viruses?
Antibiotics will not help fight these viruses and make you feel better.
In fact, they can cause more harm.
Antibiotic use can cause complications, ranging from an upset stomach to
a serious allergic reaction. Your doctor will weigh the risks and benefits
before prescribing an antibiotic. Using antibiotics only when needed is
the best way to ensure their strength for future bacterial illnesses.
Viral illnesses, such as colds, usually go away without antibiotics in
a week or two.
Remember–there are risks when taking any prescription drug. Antibiotics
should only be used when your doctor determines they are needed.
