Florida Health Care Plans is dedicated to preventive medicine and encourages members to seek assistance from a variety of resources to promote long-term health and wellbeing. This includes helping our members who are ready to quit smoking.
According to the World Health Organization, tobacco use is the single greatest cause of preventable death in the world today.* Fortunately, quitting produces immediate and significant health benefits and reduces most of the associated risks** within a few years of quitting. If you are ready to quit, make an appointment with your physician to discuss our self-paced program that will help you stop smoking.
Here are some additional resources and programs to help you quit and to increase your chances of staying smoke-free for good:
Cigarette smoking causes an estimated 443,000 deaths each year, including approximately 49,400 deaths due to exposure to secondhand smoke acording to BeTobaccoFree.gov, which has tools, tips and info for those needing assistance in kicking the habbit.
The QuitSmart program is a quit smoking class that utilizes personalized coaching provided during three 2-hour bi-weekly sessions. The program was developed by Dr. Robert Shipley, director of the Duke Medical Center Stop Smoking Clinic and is offered to Florida Health Care Plan members at various locations. Quit Smoking Now
Quit Smoking Now is a free 6-week smoking cessation program offered by the Northeast Florida Area Health Education Center (AHEC) with the support of the Florida Department of Health. It is designed to provide tobacco users with the information, resources, and support they need to quit and stay quit. To sign up for Quit Smoking Now group classes, call 1-877-QUIT-IT-NOW (877-784-8486) or visit the Northeast Florida AHEC website.
Tobacco Free Florida, the Florida Quitline, and Web Coach®
Tobacco Free Florida (TFF) is a statewide cessation and prevention campaign. The program is managed by the Florida Department of Health through the Bureau of Tobacco Prevention. Smokers and smokeless tobacco users interested in free over-the-phone assistance with quitting are encouraged to call the Florida Quitline at 1-877-U-CAN-NOW (877-822-6669) to speak with a Quit Coach®. Veterans' Smoking Cessation Program
Designed to assist veterans who want to quit smoking, this group program is available through the William V. Chappell, Jr. Veteran’s Administration Outpatient Clinic in Daytona Beach. Treatment for eligible enrolled veterans includes three 2-hour sessions meeting every other week. Freedom From Smoking (FFS) Online
This free online program offered by the American Lung Association is specifically designed for adults who want to quit smoking. FFS Online is an adaptation of the American Lung Association’s group clinic that has helped thousands of smokers to quit for good.
