Flu Vaccine Myths and Facts

Myth: The flu vaccine can give you the flu.

Fact: The flu vaccine cannot cause the flu. You may experience mild side effects such as soreness or fatigue, but these are signs your immune system is responding.

Myth: I’m healthy, so I don’t need a flu shot.

Fact: Healthy adults can still get the flu, miss work, and spread the virus to others before they realize they are sick.

Myth: The flu is just a bad cold.

Fact: The flu can cause high fever, severe fatigue, body aches, and serious complications that may require medical care or hospitalization.

Myth: I had the vaccine and still got the flu, so it doesn’t work.

Fact: While no vaccine is 100% effective, flu vaccination reduces the risk of illness, medical visits, hospitalizations, and severe outcomes.

Myth: It’s too late to get vaccinated.

Fact: As long as flu viruses are circulating, vaccination can still provide protection.

Myth: Flu vaccines contain harmful preservatives like Thimerosal.

Fact: Preservatives like Thimerosal are primarily used in multidose vials to prevent contamination and are safe. Florida Health Care Plans uses single-dose pre-filled syringes, which typically do not contain preservatives.
